Friday Fragments

It finally snowed! Not that much, but enough to make the dogs happy. My friend Ina from Alaska has gotten inundated with snow this year. Check out her blog here to read all about it.

Brandon got up in time for school and didn't miss the bus.

I finally got my cars side mirror fixed. Brandon cracked it when he shot a puck. Kinda missed the net. Instead of getting mad, I just said "You have to work on aiming the puck on the net."

I am getting ready for the Valentines Day party I am having for the wee ones in my day care. Click on the tab above "Aunt Tami's House" and you can see pictures.

My husband has been working long hours, and I miss him.

Zachary has been struggling with his grades. We took him to a doctor and he was diagnosed with ADD. He has been on a small dose of medication and so far it has worked wonders. Yesterday I got an email from his teacher - Zach got a 100% on a science quiz!

Ahren has been working for my x-step-father. It bothers me a lot that my son has contact with that JERK! In case you don't know the story behind that click here.

I just ordered a really cool bag from Preppy Player. Check out her blog if you are interested in one. She has plenty to choose from.

He is SO grounded!

Brandon has been giving us an extremely hard time this year. He was always a good student with minor issues we had to address with him. Now he is a freshman in high school and the hormones must be kicking in. He hasn't taken his grades seriously. His behavior towards teachers has been UNACCEPTABLE! He shows them a lack of respect. He even told one teacher to "Chill Out"! OH YES, he did! Another teacher gave him detention and he didn't show up for it. He has been late to school NINE times because he has missed the bus.

Last week he missed the bus and I took away phone, computer and xbox. He still had TV. Obviously it didn't work because one week later he missed the bus again. This time I took away phone, computer, xbox and TV.

He is also going to be benched at this weekends hockey games. I spoke to two of the coaches and they are on board with my decision. I was glad to have them agree. Brandon is one of the better defensemen on his High School team and I thought he may not like the idea about benching him. One coach said "working hard off the ice is just as important as working hard on the ice" and is going to talk to Brandon in school today.

Being benched is going to hurt him the worst. He loves hockey! I am hoping he gets the point and straightens out!

Last night he tried bribing me to get his phone back.

He is totally bored!

Already been to New York. I never really had a desire to see France. So I think Venice and Rome are the top two possibilities.

Super Bowl Party

It has become a tradition to host a super bowl party at our house.

Todd starts the party off by having a pre-game poker party.

Zachary beat seven men and won $90.00!

I tend to over do it with the food because I am always afraid I wont have enough. I had so many left overs. This is my left-over spread!

We topped off the evening with a Super Bowl theme cake from Costco.

I'm neither a Giants nor Patriots fan. So I didn't care who won.

I enjoyed the Madonna 1/2 time show and some of the commercials.

I hope those who watched enjoyed the game!

Sunday In My City - Hacienda Michoacana

A new Mexican Restaurant opened in my neck of the woods. My family and two other couples decided to try it last night. There are few mexican restaurants in the area so this one was packed with new patrons. The atmosphere was wonderful, bright colors, festive music, very courteous staff and GREAT food!

We will definitely be coming back to this restaurant!!

Todd went to a Flyers game last week. He bought tickets from a friend who has seats in a club box. I wasn't able to go with him because I had to take our son to a doctors appointment. :(

During warm ups he was taking pictures of the players. He got a few shots of goalies before the attendants stopped him. They measured his camera lens with a dollar bill and said his lens was too big! (I could make an inappropriate comment, but I will leave it to your imagination).

The attendants escorted Todd to the rink manager. Really? The manager said they would let him go this time -Seriously?- but he couldn't take any more pictures.

The Flyers beat the Jets 4-1.

Nothing says it like a Romance Card

I was shopping in Target last week and happened to pass by the card isle.

The Valentines Day cards caught my eye.

They weren't the typical love cards you would think a husband or wife would purchase for their spouse.

But no matter who you are, there was a card for you…

Weekend Recap

Brandon had two games this weekend. By hockey standards, that's an easy weekend. Friday night he played for his high school team.

Saturday's game was with VFC (his travel team) and they played against the top team in their league. VFC was the underdog and had three players missing due to injury.

The Quakers bench is stacked!

Valley Forge Colonials only had 10 players.

My favorite play of the game! Brandon checking an opponent so hard that he flew up into the air. {Proud Hockey Mom Moment!}

It was a competitive game. The boys hung in there but lost 7-5.

They didn't hang their heads though! These boys are tough!

I got to see my all time favorite hockey player (#10 Philadelphia Flyers - now retired) John LeClair. He was coaching his son and team: Junior Flyers.

Also on the Jr. Flyers is the son of Chris Gratton (another former Flyers player).

After the hockey game we stopped at a sports grille restaurant for lunch. The atmosphere was cool. We were surrounded by sports themes. Of course my favorite is the hockey wall of fame.

The menu consisted of a lot of hamburgers and fatty foods. I tried a creamy potato soup that didn't turn out to be creamy or good.

Unfortunately I don't think we will be going back there again.

Saturday night was date night. We went to The Movie Tavern. It's a movie theater where you can dine and watch a movie at the same time. The seats are leather and comfy. They have a TV tray that swivels and a cup holder. You can even order WINE! :-) And there is a little button you press if you need ~~more wine~~ service.

My hubby, me, my BFF and her hubby went to see Underworld in 3D.

Sunday was a day to relax.

I tried to scrapbook, but Corbie kept getting in the way!

Happy Friday!!!!

My husband snoring could wake up the dead. I exaggerate not! I am the type of person who needs it to be so quiet you could hear a pin drop. For the last two weeks he has been sleeping on the couch because I cannot sleep with the loud snoring. I found this product in Target and tried them last night.

They work! My husband was able to sleep in our bed again!

He was so excited.

I slept like a baby!

Our cat Libby is a bit protective of her food and water dishes ever since we got our new kitty, Corbie.

And, of course I have to find a funny hockey picture to make my week all that better.

Visit from Aunt Martha

Last week I had a meltdown.

I felt like a crazy lady. I was so up and down and all over the place. Then I realized it is THAT time of month, which I ~~bitterly~~ lovingly refer to as "Aunt Martha". The week before I start my period I become that mad insane crazy lady. My husband can attest, I don't have normal PMS either! He will ask me as timidly as he can "Is Aunt Martha coming?".
This month was worse!
The week before Aunt Martha was to visit my doctor took me off of one medication and upped another. I forgot to take my antidepressant for two days. I was doing well and decided I didn't need the antidepressant anymore.

HUGE MISTAKE!

In a few days I was going through withdrawal and cycling from happy, crying, raging, confused, sad, depressed… and the cycle started all over. This pattern got worse over a course of a three day period. I finally realized I needed to start taking the antidepressant again. The day after I began my dosage I feel 100% better.

It is amazing what one little pill can do!

Now if that amazing pill could keep Aunt Martha from visiting!!!

8th grade Dance

Last spring Brandon had his first formal dance. He went with his (now-x) girlfriend, Jenn and friends, R.K. and Samantha.

Brandon and I spent HOURS looking for a pink tie that would match Jenn's pink dress. It was impossible to find that shade of pink in a tie. So we settled with a light pink tie.

It's funny to look back on these pictures because Brandon is now a head taller than Jenn.

They made a cute couple, but Mommy wasn't ready for her baby to get serious. I was kinda happy when the "relationship" only lasted 6 months.

Mistakes Hockey Parents Make

As a Hockey Mom, I have seen so many CRAZY parents! They yell obscenities at the referees, some have gotten kicked out of games or even gotten into fights with other team parents.

I know I'm not perfect. I do however, cheer positively and energetically (according to Brandon a little bit too energetically)!

Here are some of the No-No's of what a Hockey Parent should NOT do!

Lecturing their child about the sport's techniques and strategies when they themselves have never played the sport.

These parents think their child 's sport looks easy and fail to appreciate the complexity, difficulty and challenge of their child's sport.
I'd like to see THEM on the ice!

Trying to coach their child FROM the STANDS when they are not a qualified coach.

I think these parents expect too much in performance
These parents display poor sportsmanship.
They yell insructions and coaching comments and only distracts or confuses their child.
Kids imitate their parents behavior (good or bad)!

Taking their child's sport experience too seriously.

They are vicariously through their child's ice hockey experiences.
Failing to see the value of sports lessons as preparation for life itself.
Seeing what is lacking in their child, and not encouraging what is good.
Rushing their child's early ice hockey technique development is not healthy. It should be the slowest and most careful period of all.

Unrealistically overblown assessment of their child's talent.

Placing their child into sports situations where they cannot succeed.
Simultaneously having too many coaches, trainers, etc. who conflict in approach and technique.
Making their child inappropriately play injured or sick.
We've all seen these parents who think their child is the second coming of Christ (no offense to Christ).

As a parent have you ever seen an inappropriate mom or dad act like this at a sporting event or any other event your child has performed in?

In years gone by, life slowed for one day a week: a day for worship and quiet reflection, a day for family and friends, a day apart from the everyday battle. It was also a day of celebration.

It can be that way again.

It's time to revive the Sunday table!

Sour Cream-Apple Bundt Cake
Apples
6 medium Golden Delicious apples
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted bugger
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp cardamom
Adjust the rack to the center of the oven and preheat to 350F.
Prepare the Apples:
Peel, core and quarter the apples; slice quarter into 3 slices lengthwise. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium-low heat; when it begins to bubble, add in the apples, along with the sugar and cardamom, and saute over low heat until the apples are tender but still firm, 3 to 4 minutes. Remove the apples from heat and cool to room temperature. Drain the apple slices and reserve the syrup - you should have 2 to 3 tablespoons.
Cake Batter
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking power
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon all spice
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup sour cream
2 large eggs, room temperature
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Reserved syrup from the apples
1/2 cup fresh bread crumbs
For the Pan
2 tablespoons unsalted buter
1/2 cup fresh bread crumbs
Make the Cake:

Melt the butter and cool to room temperature.
in a large bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, allspice, cinnamon and salt; whisk together thoroughly.
combine the cooled butter and sour cream in a separate bowl and beat until smooth; add in the eggs and beat until they are fully blended.
add the dry ingredients, 1/2 cup at a time, into the sour cream mixture, mixing on low speed just long enough after each addition to fully incorporate. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula. Add in the vanilla and the reserved apple syrup, then increase the mixer speed to medium and beat for about 1 minute. Toss the cooked apple slices with the 1/2 cup of bread crumbs and fold them into the batter.
liberally butter a 9-inch bundt pan with the 2 tablespoons butter and sprinkle the inside with the fresh bread crumbs. Make sure the pan is completely coated before tapping out the excess.
spoon the prepared into the bundt pan and bake for 50-60 minutes. When it is done, the cake should be pulling away from the edges of the pan and a wooden pick should come out clean when inserted. COol on a wire rack for 20 minutes, then run a thin metal spatula around the edges of the pan to loosen. Gently invert the cake onto the cooling rack and cool to room temperature.

Serve the Cake:

If desired, lightly dust each slice with powdered sugar and serve with mounds of freshly whipped cream.

In case you haven't noticed, I talk a lot about hockey!

I'm sure it gets monotonous hearing about hockey, hockey, hockey….

You may surprised to know I have another son! Yep! Really!

His name is Zachary and he loves to play Golf.

Zachary is on the high school golf team. In fact, when Zach was a freshman, he had the highest golf average on his team!

Unlike hockey, I cannot attend Zachary's golf matches. I can't cheer him on, I can't take pictures, I can't hug him when he wins, I can't embarrass him….

and unlike his brother...LIFE IS GOOD…. for Zachary!

Wednesday Hodgpodge - Vol 62

1. A new Miss America was crowned on Saturday night-did you watch? If you were a contestant what wouldyour talent be?

No, I don't watch too much TV (other than hockey games). I don't even have a desire to be a contestant. If Miss America would put on hockey gear and check into the other contestants….. then I think I'd watch. LOL

2. Do you have houseplants? Real or fake?

I have many houseplants. All real. I love to garden and since I can't be outside in the winter, I bring a little bit of the outdoors…indoors.

3. When you were in school did you speak up or were you more of the hide your face, avoid eye contact, and pray the teacher didn't call on you type of student?

It really depends upon which class. I loved English, History and Algebra. I did well in those classes. The other classes I didn't so well in, those are the ones I was too embarrassed to utter anything.

4. Next Monday marks the Chinese New Year...what do you order when someone suggests Chinese food?

We were just at PF Changs Friday night. I ordered Spring Rolls and Lo Mein with vegetables. I'm not a huge meat eater and I tend to order veggie dinners we we go out to eat.

5. How would you define a miracle? What would it take for you to consider something a miracle?

The first thing that comes to mind is the movie "Miracle on Ice". It's a hockey movie (of course) about the 1980 team who won the Olympics against the Russians. What made this a miracle was the USA team was a hodgepodge of players, who were not professional

s playing against an elite team who played professional and probably most of their lives.

6. What's your favorite Disney song? If you're stuck you'll find a list here.

Monday Listicles

I'll Never: 10 Things You Said You'd Never Do But Have Caught Yourself Doing.

1. Getting up at 5am for a hockey game. (As all my friends know… I do this routinely).

2.   Gain weight. (Cry me a river, right). I was always "that skinny girl" in school. Now that I am in my 40's and have had three children I have some extra 15lbs I can't seem to loose. My friends still think I am "that skinny lady". But I cannot stand my "muffin top" hanging over my jeans.

3. Trade my sports car in for a Mini-van! When Brandon was baby #3, my sports car couldn't fit all the car seats. I had no choice… . Now that the boys are teens, I was able to get rid of the mini van and get a GMC Acadia. It's "sporty" and yet has the room of a minivan. You know, to put all that hockey equipment in!

4. Take out the trash. That's a man's job, right? Well, he is getting better at remembering to do this.

5. Go to church. (Lord, Please don't strike me down). Growing up my family was not a church going family. When I met my husband (whose parents are both pastors) I began going to church. Surprise, surprise… I LIKED IT!

6.   Dread having sex. (BWHAHAHAHA!!!!). Call me naive, but when I first began having sex, I thought it was so great.. I didn't understand why anyone would not want to have it daily.

7.    Have credit card debt. Since I am an impulsive person… well, this just didn't work out too well.

8. Be depressed like my mother. Unfortunately some things are hereditary. Luckily I am on medication to help with it.

9.   Never, never, ever have a man walk all over me. I can say that I haven't let this happen, but I did have to learn to compromise. I am lucky to have a wonderful husband!

10. Drink Pepsi. Growing up my parents bought Coke and I always thought it tasted better. In my 20's I began working in an office for KFC. At the time KFC was owned by Pepsico. Since Coke obviously wasn't allowed in the building, I began drinking Pepsi. Now I am addicted my to Diet Pepsi.

Weekend Recovery Needed!

Friday night was my BFFs son's 15th birthday. We went to PF Changs with the Feltenberger Family to celebrate.

Brandon had 3 hockey games this weekend.

Saturday we got up at 7am to go to the first hockey game. Lucky for us this game was on home ice and we didn't have to travel.

While there, I went shopping for hockey T-shirts. Found this one:

After we got home I had some energy. Not sure where the spark came from, but I took advantage and gutted the two upstairs bathrooms and accomplished a much needed cleaning.

Sunday Morning we had to get up at 5am. Yes! That's right! 5am!
This hockey game was at Ice Works in Aston, PA (which is an hours travel time).
The game began at 7:45am and players have to be there an hour earlier for warm ups.

This early in the morning there was NO ONE at the rink.

EMPTY! Notice, not a single soul in the stands!

Seriously, that is SAD!

Eventually our players came out.
Brandon looks like he is wishing he didn't have to get up at 5am!

I am happy to report VFC won the game 5-4!

That made getting up a 5am a bit better.

Of course I went looking for more Hockey T-shirts as soon as the Pro Shop opened up for business.

Sunday night at 9:15pm Brandon had his third game. This one was for his high school team, Daniel Boone. Games typically last an hour and a half. By the time Brandon got undressed and came out of the locker room, it was 11pm.

We didn't get home until 11:30pm.

I should have taken a nap Sunday afternoon!

Needless to say, I need a day to recover from the weekend! Most folks have off Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I do not. I have four little ones to watch. It's better than the six I normally have though.

Mrs. Fix It - Tackling the Tub!

I couldn't stand it anymore!

The caulk around the tub in the boys bathroom was just nasty!

I decided to do something about it.

Step #1: Remove all caulk.

(This is harder than it looks and it took some time to get it all off).

I used a flathead screwdriver to scrape it away.

Step #2: Clean the area really good. No caulk residue can be left!

Step #3: Use rubbing alcohol to make sure all of caulking is off the tub and floor.

Step #4: Dry the area really good.

Step #5: Peel off the back of the caulk strip 12 inches at a time.

Apply Caulk Strip by pressing it on! It isn't too hard and adheres rather nicely.

You cannot use the shower for 12 hours though.

Step #6: Enjoy a clean bathroom!

I am so proud of myself! It looks pretty!

Now, if the boys can't just keep it clean! (yeah right!)

HAM WITH PINEAPPLE SAUCE

1/4 (4 pound) boneless fully-cooked ham

3 tablespoons and 2-1/4 teaspoons water, divided

1/4 cup and 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar

1-1/2 teaspoons soy sauce

1-1/2 teaspoons ketchup

1/2 teaspoon ground mustard

1/3 cup and 2 tablespoons undrained crushed pineapple

2-1/4 teaspoons cornstarch

Directions

Place ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Bake at 325 degrees F for 1-1/4 to 2 hours or until a meat thermometer reads 140 degrees F and ham is heated through.
Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine 1/4 cup water, brown sugar, soy sauce, ketchup, mustard and pineapple. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 10 minutes.
Combine cornstarch and remaining water until smooth; stir into pineapple sauce. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.
Serve with the ham.

Ellie's New Collar

Miss Ellie Mae gets very excited when she gets a new collar. (It is like me when I get a new piece of jewelry!) She happily wags her tail and prances around as if she is a princess. Actually, I consider her my princess because I am surrounded by all boys (and hubby) in my household. It's just me and Ellie. Us girls have to stick together!

We put our phone numbers on the back of the tag. ID tags will assist in identifying a lost or injured pet and are one of the best ways to save a pet parent the agony and heartache of losing a pet.

1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English in 2012-

amazing, baby bump, shared sacrifice, occupy, blowback, man cave, the new normal, pet parent, win the future, trickeration, ginormous, and thank you in advance.

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Go here to read more about how the words are chosen.

I would vote for trickeration and ginormous. Mainly because they are words that were made up to begin with. Some idiot trying to sound intelligent when really it just makes one raise their eyebrow and say "Huh?" Oh! And when you type ginormous on the computer, spell check actually thinks it's a real word!

2. Are you easily embarrassed?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Much to my husband's embarrassment!

We only live about 4-5 hours from Washington DC. Quite a few years ago we went on a family trip and the boys have taken school class trips. Todd went recently for a conference. Here is my favorite picture that he took.

5. sit ups-planks-lunges-squats...which do you hate the least?

Can I say I hate them all? No? Hmm, I'd say sit ups because I can do more of them without hurting as much. =)

6. What's a small act of kindness you were shown that you've never forgotten?

A few months ago I was sick with a horrible sinus infection. It took me over a week to recover. Usually once I begin the antibiotics, I feel better the next day. This time it didn't work! For those who don't know me well, I work in my home as a child care provider. I was so ill that I couldn't watch the children. When this happens the parents have to find alternative child care. One of the mom's volunteered to stay home on Monday and watch the kids for me. Two of the other mom's made dinners for my family. I am luck to have such a great group of parents who are understanding and caring!

7. Have you ever been a blood donor?

I hate needles! I sweat, I panic, I feel lightheaded… I don't think I'd be a good candidate to donate blood. One would think I would try to overcome my fear for such a worth cause - maybe some day I will be brave enough!

Hockey T-shirts

My friend, Heather and I always like to visit the Pro shops at every hockey rink we go to. The most entertaining part of the shop is the Hockey T-Shirts. Hockey humor to understand some, but the innuendoes are obvious! =)

Hockey players gloves smell so bad - even after taking them off, their hands still carry the smell on them!

This is something every player is taught at an early age. Kids tend to use just one hand. =)

The first half of this season has been marked by a few great victories and heroic efforts in defeat. It's been a tough season because the team is playing up two levels from last year. To have a multiple hockey teams in the same rink can be somewhat complicated. There are three levels: 'AA', 'A' and 'B' - 'AA' being at the top. Because we have two teams at the same Bantam level both teams cannot be an 'A' team. The '98 Bantams are listed at 'A'. Our '97 Bantam players must then be listed as 'AA', even if the coaches feel that the players would have a better season record at the 'A' level.

Why cant the '98s be a 'B' team you may ask? Last year's statics come into play too. Since both the 98's and 97's had such a fabulous record (pretty much undefeated) they cannot petition down to be a 'B' team. It can be confusing if you don't understand the DVHL league rules. I've been dealing with it since Brandon was 7 and I still don't get it all.

Sunday In My City - Mummers Day Parade

The Mummers parade is a celebration of the New Year but is serious business in Philadelphia. Clubs work on the costumes and practice all year for their one day in the sun (…wind, rain or snow).

This year temperatures were in the 50'sF. Gorgeous day for a parade!

Mummers are men and women of all ages who belong to one of 44 social clubs that make up the organization. The clubs, split into four divisions — Comics, Fancies, String Bands and Fancy Brigades

String Bands are judged on their musical presentation as well as the costumes. Seeing and hearing a String Band performing live in the parade is a one-of-a-kind experience.

The costs for making the outfits plus fees to choreographers and prop designers often far exceed the prizes available. While club fund raisers, hall rentals and bank loans often cover much of the expense, individual members frequently spend hundreds or thousands of dollars of their own money.

Return to Sunday Dinner - Menu #1

Roast Beef

1 4-5lb boneless rump roast
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp granulated garlic
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp paprika
1 tbls coarse-ground black pepper
2 tsp coarse salt

Adjust the rack to the bottom of the oven and preheat to 450 degrees F.

Prepare the Roast:

Blot any excess moisture from the roast using paper towels. Rub the Worcestershire sauce over the entire roast; allow the roast to sit for a few minutes, turning it several times so that the meat can absorb the Worcestershire.
Combine the granulated garlic, onion powder, paprika and coarse-ground pepper in a small bowl; sprinkle the seasoning mixture evenly over the roast, pressing it into the fat and meat just enough to stick. Allow the seasoned roast to stand at room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes before roasting.
Rub the roast with the coarse salt and place it fat side up a shallow roasting pan. Roast for 15 minutes, then lower the oven temperature to 325 F. Continue to cook until the internal temperature reaches 5 to 10 degrees below the desired serving temperature, about 2 hours. (Note: Allow about 20 minutes per pound for medium-rare.) When the roast is done, carefully remove the pan from the oven and transfer the roast to a clean cutting board. Allow the roast to stand for 20 minutes before slicing.

Pan Gravy:

3 tbls all-purpose flour

2 cups beef broth

Salt & Pepper to taste

Use a spoon to skim all the fat from the liquid that remains in the roasting pan. Reserve about 4 tablespoons of fat in a small mixing bowl and cool until it is just barely warm, 4 to 5 minutes.
Whisk the flour into the fat to form a roux. Scrape the drippings from the bottom of the pan, add in the beef broth and stir over medium heat until the broth begins to simmer.
Whisk in the roux and bring to a boil, then simmer for 4 to 5 minutes. Add a little water, a tablespoon at a time, as needed to achieve the desired consistency.
Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Carrots

4 cups peeled baby carrots

1/4 cup (1/2 stick butter)

1/4 cup honey

1 cup orange juice

place the carrots into a skillet of boiling salted water and simmer until they are tender on the outside and still crunchy in the middle (al dente), 4 to 6 minutes. Drain off the water.
add the butter to the drained carrots and continue cooking over medium heat just long enough to melt the butter. Toss the carrots in the melted butter, then add in the honey and orange juice; blend together until the liquid begins bubbling. Simmer for 6 to 8 minutes, tossing the carrots from time to time, until the liquid is reduced to a glistening glaze.

Winter Classic

The NHL Winter Classic is an annual event held by the National Hockey League (NHL) on or around New Year's Day in which a regular-season hockey game is played outdoors. The first Winter Classic was held in 2008.
The 2012 Winter Classic was in Philadelphia. The ice rink was on the baseball field of Citizens Park, home to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The NHL has done a good job of promoting hockey and the fans absolutely love the idea of an outdoor game. I didn't attend the Winter Classic. I watched it on TV curled in front of a warm fire.

The Alumni Game was held on Saturday with many hockey heros in attendance.

My favorite was John LeClair and Eric Lindros from the 1990s. I also got to see the famous Bernie Parent (Hall of Fame goaltender who won two Stanley Cups with the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1970s). The newer generations of Flyers fans know Bernie as a guy in a white mask that was really good at hockey. They never had the chance to actually see him play. It didn't matter that he is 66 years old. The fans gave him a curtain call after he left the ice. Fitting, of course, because he only made the return for those fans.

It also was sweet that the Flyers beat the Rangers in the Alumni game.

Unfortunately my team didn't win the game the Winter Classic game. Even though they lost the game I believe people around here will recall the entire weekend (from the sold-out alumni game, to the tributes to former Flyers great, to the orange coloring of the fans in the stands, to the Liberty Bell ringing when the Flyers scored, to the little kids playing on the adjacent rink, to the snow) with a smile on their face!

For the last few years we have hosted a New Years Eve party.

The Girls!

The adults had a fun playing cards and "adult" games.

My favorite was called "Boxers and Briefs".

Does your best friend wear boxers or briefs? Who likes sloppy kisses? Do you talk to plants? Who wants to know where sea monkeys come from?

Boxers or Briefs is a hilarious party game that gets everyone laughing and revealing things about themselves (in no particular order).

I think there was something living and breathing in there….

Left overs become… well, they become something unrecognizable.

It was about time to clean out the Fridge!

The dishwasher ended up full of tupperware.

The recycle bin is filled with empty plastic containers and soda bottles.

AND

I am proud to say my fridge is clean! Yeah ME!

But it's also empty.

Now I need to go grocery shopping…

Reading Royals

Last night the family attended a Reading Royals hockey game. The Reading Royals are a professional ice hockey team that currently plays in the Atlantic Division of the ECHL (Eastern Conference Hockey League).

For those who don't know much about Hockey, the NHL is the main professional league. Under the NHL is the AHL (American Hockey League). Under that league is the ECHL.

The Royals play their home games at the Sovereign Center located in downtown Reading, Pennsylvania.

1. Share something you loved about your Christmas Day.

Watching Corbie (my new kitty) play with the wrapping paper. It was hysterical!

2. You get to put five items in a time capsule to be opened in 100 years, what items would you choose and why?

Assuming the time capsule is for future family members I would chose items that described what our lives were like and things about our family. A video camera with tapes I've recorded since the boys were born. The family tree that I have dated back to the early 1700's. My journals.

3. What do you like on a cracker?

Bruchetta

4. Do you make resolutions at the start of a new year? How'd that work out for you this past year?

Yes, I do. No, it never works out.

5. What's a song or song lyric you'll associate with 2011?

God Gave Me You by Blake Shelton. The is dedicated to my husband.

6. How will you ring in the new year?

We host a New Years Eve party with close friends and family. I love New Years Eve! I enjoy watching the boys set off fireworks, playing cards, laughing, and counting down to the New Years!

7. What is something you look forward to in 2012?

A year of peaceful mental health. I finally found a doctor who has prescribed me medicine for my bipolar and it has worked wonders!!

Scotland has the largest New Years Eve celebration, lasting four days, called Hogmanay.

We spent the day at Todd's brothers house. The Miller family celebrated with a late lunch, gifts galore and tons of fun!

Ahren was ecstatic to get a new "green" coat. I personally do not like the "puke" green color but it made him happy.

When this season gets to be too much - just read this poem…

Twas the night before Christmas, when all thru the abode
Only one creature was stirring, & she was cleaning the commode.
The children were finally sleeping, all snug in their beds,
while visions of Nintendo 64 & Barbie, flipped through their heads.

The dad was snoring in front of the TV,
with a half-constructed bicycle propped on his knee.
So only the mom heard the reindeer hooves clatter,
which made her sigh, "Now what is the matter?"

With toilet bowl brush still clutched in her hand,
She descended the stairs, & saw the old man.
He was covered with ashes & soot, which fell with a shrug,
"Oh great," muttered the mom, "Now I have to clean the rug."

"Ho Ho Ho!" cried Santa, "I'm glad you're awake."
"your gift was especially difficult to make."
"Thanks, Santa, but all I want is time alone."
"Exactly!" he chuckled, "So, I've made you a clone."

"A clone?" she muttered, "What good is that?"
"Run along, Santa, I've no time for chit chat."
Then out walked the clone - The mother's twin,

The clone changed the small one & hummed her tune,
as she bundled the child in a blanket cocoon.

The mom frowned & said, "Sorry, Santa, no deal."
That's my child's LOVE she is trying to steal."
Smiling wisely Santa said, "To me it is clear,
Only one loving mother is needed here."

The mom kissed her child & tucked her in bed.

Sometimes we need reminding of what life is all about.

Especially at times during the Holiday season, when all we seem to do

is clean and bake and shop and and and and and and and….

So stop for a moment and hug that little one so special, whether he/she

is 2 or 22, or even older than that. For they are the Gift that God gave us

in life...and what a gift to be treasured, far above any other!

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Are you cooking Christmas dinner? How many will be round your table this year? What are we having?

I host Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas dinner is held at my brother & sister-in-laws house. They have the younger children, so it is easier for them if we come to their house.

When our boys were younger, my mother-in-law had Christmas dinner at her house. 10 adults and 6 kids will be attending Christmas dinner this year.

Dinner is a hodgepodge (no pun intended) of dishes that everyone brings: Ham, Roast Beef, Lasagna, string bean casserole… and what-ever else shows up...

2. What is one must-have Christmas cookie in your house?

CHOCOLATE CHIP!!!!!

3. Santa likes a glass of milk with his cookies. Do you? What kind of milk is on tap at your house-skim? almond? soy? full fat (Gasp!)

I keep skim milk and whole milk. Skim milk for cereals and drinking (and of course Santa - I think he would prefer skim milk)… whole milk for kids I babysit and for cooking.

4. Time magazine recently named their 'Person of the Year' for 2011. This is the person the editors believe had the greatest impact, for better or worse, in the past year. This year they chose 'The Protester'. Your thoughts? Who would you name Person of the Year for 2011?

In this past year there has been a lot of protesters through out the world, even in our own country. People are not happy with the way governments (and dictators) are ruling. They are tired of being treated unfairly and want better for their country, themselves and their children. I prefer to see a peaceful protest, but yet I can understand how things get out of control when tempers flair, when a belief is so strong and when no one is listening.

I woud name not a person, but an organization: The ASPCA who fights animal cruelty, rescues animals from abuse, works to pass humane laws and shares resources with shelters through out the USA. The ASPCA was founded in 1866 and was the first humane organization to help animals.

5. December 21st is National Flashlight Day... when was the last time you needed a flashlight and did you know right where to find one?

There is actually a "national" day for the flashlight? Who would have thought?

The last time a flashlight was needed at our house was during an extremely bad wind storm and there were tornado alerts (which is almost unheard of in the part of PA where I live).

Todd, Brandon and I were at a hockey tournament - about 3 hours away. Of course I was panicking because Ahren and Zachary were at home. I called them and told them to go in the family room (which is our finished basement). Ahren and Zachary couldn't find a flashlight, so they lit every candle they could find and slept in the family room.

When we came home the following day, trees were down everywhere. Some were even uprooted in our development. I have only seen destruction like that on TV, never close to home. We were lucky and didn't suffer any damage.

7. What Christmas carol lyric means the most to you?

I don't have one specific line to a song. I love "Little Drummer Boy". A little boy, who was poor and couldn't give a gift fit for a King… found that his gift of playing his drum was much more priceless than an expensive gift. The gift of LOVE is a beautiful thing!

I admire the Secret Santa's who have been paying off the Kmart layaways for needy families. This random act of kindness will bring joy to so many little children and ease the minds of the parents who had no idea how they were going to pay for the gifts.

Corbie - week #3

Corbie is adjusting well. She is a very, very curious cat!

This week she found the fish tank.

The fish keep her entertained and are not afraid to come right up to the glass and swish their tails at Corbie. I think the fish are mentally sticking their tongues out at her! =)

Corbie gently takes her paw and brushes it against the glass.

Ellie can't be left out on the action!

It's funny to see the dog watching the cat, who is watching the fish!

Shopping Trip

Todd and I went Christmas shopping at the King of Prussia Mall. The parking lots were filled and it was difficult to find a spot. One lady even tried to steal my spot I was waiting for. I think the evil look I gave her scared her away. =)

There was a huge traffic jam ~ just waiting to get into the mall parking lot.

The King of Prussia Mall has two sections. The Plaza and The Court.

The Plaza opened in 1963 as an open-air shopping mall with JCPenney, E. J. Korvette (department store), and an ACME supermarket. By the late 1970s it had become a partially enclosed super-regional mall adding Gimbels, and Wanamaker's.

The Court opened in 1981 as a fully enclosed mall with department stores such as: Bamberger's (later to become Macy's), Bloomingdale's, and Abraham & Straus.

There are plans to create an expansion to connect The Court and The Plaza. This new retail connector will feature over 40 stores, dining choices from some of Philadelphia's well known celebrity chefs, an upscale dining pavilion and a customer lounge.

This project will bring the largest shopping mall in the United States under one roof.

Merry Go Round

This tree was on top of the merry-go-round. It was HUGE!

I personally like Lemon Sorbet.

Of course I had to find a store that had Hockey Stuff!!

I'm not brave enough to wear these stiletto's. There were so many varieties in almost every shoe store!

We bought these purses for my nieces, Max & Morgan. Todd and I had a fun time shopping and we got many deals! I can't wait for Christmas!!!

The BEST Christmas Gift for Someone with Bipolar

Well, I’m still feeling a little tired today — still think I’m trying to do too much while being sick. I need to slow down, not just to get healthy but I also do not want to go into a manic episode. There was a time when I would have craved being "hyper". But no more! I’ve had one more episode than I ever wanted to have.

But if you’re like me, you’re just grateful for every day that you go without an episode, and for that I feel so blessed at this Christmas season. I used to fly into rages one minute and by happy the next. All the while my husband looking at me like I was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

I am getting so excited about Christmas coming! But I have to know not to get too excited or to let the spending get out of hand. I’ve been shopping on the internet (since I've been sick and can't get my butt off the couch). Every day something new is arriving, and it’s fun to get things in the mail! AND I’ve gotten such great deals! I’m more excited about seeing the boys open their presents than I am about getting anything.

I thought about what I wanted for Christmas, and I was totally taken aback, as I realized I already have everything I want and need, because I have gotten my bipolar disorder under control. What more could I ask for (except I did give my hubby a few ideas, like B&N gift card – I love to read, and love my NOOK).

So if you haven’t quite got the Christmas spirit yet – it’s not about presents and big trees and lots of decorations. It’s about appreciating the gift of your stability. That’s the greatest gift we could get, after all!
